A barrel sponge is an animal, and a slow one: a giant of this size may be centuries old, filtering its own volume of water many times a day. To a green turtle it is a chair.
This was the photographer's first dive in Bunaken. Late in the day the current built and most of the group took shelter on the far side of the reef. The turtle had found its own shelter and was not leaving it.
He swam into the current to reach it and made the frame from less than a metre away. The turtle did not move. Bunaken National Park, north Sulawesi.
