Spiderman

Squat lobster burrow · Size 3 mm

The story · in my own words

Five millimetres across, and every hair on it is sharp.

The bug-eye squat lobster is a cousin of the hairy squat lobster and about as big as this sentence's full stop is wide. It lives in a hole in the reef with only the head and the front arms showing, and from there it watches, with eyes on short stalks that give it the name and, in this frame, the whole picture.

Dauin's slopes are black sand and rubble, and the animal is red; a snoot brought the strobe down to a spot so the sand around it fell away and the reds and whites came up. The eyes are the sharpest thing in the frame. At this size the depth of field is a millimetre or so, and the eyes are exactly where it fell.

The technique and lighting lines link to the craft articles that explain them. A dash means the record does not hold it, and I would rather show the gap than fill it.

Postage is by the tube, not the sheet

Postage is the largest single cost in a print order, and it is charged by the tube. A second print travels in the same one.
