Pugnose pipefish · Size 1 cm

The story · in my own words

The pugnose pipefish is about the width of a few strands of thread, and it lives its whole life among the polyps of a single coral head. Look at how large the polyps appear in the frame and you have its scale.

It is found higher on the wall than most of the small things divers search for, where the surge reaches, so the diver sways while the subject does not.

The light is a snoot at eighty degrees, a narrow beam that casts across the polyps and leaves the rest dark. Holding it, and the camera, and position, on a deep Misool wall in a gentle surge is the whole difficulty of the picture. Misool, Raja Ampat.

A pugnose pipefish, Misool.

The technique and lighting lines link to the craft articles that explain them. A dash means the record does not hold it, and I would rather show the gap than fill it.

Postage is by the tube, not the sheet

Postage is the largest single cost in a print order, and it is charged by the tube. A second print travels in the same one.
