Soft corals have no stone skeleton. They stand up by pumping water into themselves, and they open when the current runs, so a full tree like this one is a sign the tide is moving. When it slackens they sag to half the size.
In Raja Ampat they grow to a scale seen almost nowhere else, some spanning three metres, in the reds and purples that the water strips from everything else at depth until a strobe gives them back.
This one was open and full when the diver arrived. Misool, Raja Ampat.
