The lion's mane is the largest jellyfish in the world. In Arctic water the bell reaches two metres and the tentacles trail for thirty; in the Salish Sea they are smaller, and still the biggest thing drifting.
It has no brain and no eyes. It pulses, it trails a mane of tentacles that sting whatever they touch, and it goes where the current takes it, feeding on what the tentacles catch.
Photographed from below against the surface, the bell became a disc of light with the green of the Pacific Northwest around it. Salish Sea, British Columbia.
