Nobody tell this one it is spot prawn season in British Columbia.
Spot prawns are the coast's delicacy: a short spring season, boats out at dawn, restaurants with a chalkboard. Underwater they are something else: long-legged, translucent, striped in colours that only show under a strobe, with eyes on stalks that turn to follow you. This one turned to follow the camera and stayed there, front on, perfectly symmetrical, with an expression the title describes better than any sentence.
Porteau Cove, October 2017, in five metres of visibility. The shot is what a macro lens does when the animal comes to it rather than the other way round: the eyes are the sharpest thing in the frame and the legs run out of focus to the edges, so that the whole picture is a face.
A spot prawn head-on against black water, both stalked eyes and the translucent carapace sharp, Howe Sound & the Sunshine Coast.
