The last dive of 2017, in thirty centimetres of snow.
The air was five below. The water, as it is on this coast in winter, was the clearest it gets all year: the plankton gone, the light coming straight down through green. A moon jelly the size of a dinner plate drifted between the camera and the sun, and for a second the sun went out behind it and came round the edges as a ring.
Nothing about this frame is arranged. It is a fisheye pointed straight up from a few metres down, a fiftieth of a second, and a jellyfish choosing its moment. What you are looking at is the reason a diver puts on a drysuit in the snow: the sea is at its best exactly when everybody else has gone home.
