A snake eel spends its day buried to the eyes in sand, and a head like this one is all a diver ever sees of an animal that may be a metre long beneath it. It breathes, watches, and waits for dark.
The shrimp on its head is not prey. Cleaner shrimp advertise with waving antennae, and fish that could swallow them whole instead hold still and let them work, picking parasites and dead skin from around the eyes and mouth.
The eel opened its mouth and the shrimp went to work. The frame is the two of them at the moment of trust. Lembeh Strait, north Sulawesi.
