Twelve centimetres of octopus, out in the open, hunting.
The wonderpus takes its name from the German for marvel, and earns it: rust and cream bands that shift as it moves, arms that reach into every hole in the sand in turn, and a way of walking on two arms while the other six do the searching. It looks so much like its cousin the mimic octopus that the two were confused for years; this one was not properly described until 2006.
Four metres of visibility in the strait that afternoon, and the animal did not care. One strobe with a light-shaping device, angled low, so the light rakes across the bands and the sand falls dark; a whisper of fill from the second so the far arms do not vanish. Every arm is doing something different. That is what you are looking at.
A wonderpus with its arms up, the Lembeh Strait.
